Eric Rudolph apologized for the 1996 Olympics bombing in a hearing on Monday during which he was ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison, reported the dpa. "Listening to the victims, I can't begin to understand the pain I inflicted on these innocent people," Rudolph told an Atlanta courtroom, according to CNN. One person died in the bombing during a concert at Centennial Olympic Park and dozens were hurt. Rudolph, 38, had been previously sentenced to multiple life terms for a series of bombings of abortion clinics. One in 1998 in Birmingham, Alabama, killed an off-duty police officer. Rudolph expressed regret over the attack on the Olympics, which he said was meant to embarrass Washington and discourage people from attending the Games. "I accept full responsibility for the consequences," he said. "I would do anything to take that night back and, to those victims, I apologize." When Rudolph was identified as a suspect in the attacks, he went into hiding for more than five years in the North Carolina hills, eluding a massive manhunt. --More 2244 Local Time 1944 GMT
