A moderate earthquake in southern China injured 26 people, state media said Sunday. No deaths were reported from the 5.3 magnitude quake that hit Yunnan province at about 1 p.m. Saturday, according to AP. The quake destroyed houses and damaged reservoirs, highways and telecommunications networks, the official Xinhua News Agency said. «The local government has organized immediately disaster-relief work and sent a large amount of tents and quilts to the disaster-afflicted areas,» Xinhua said, citing Zhang Jihua, director of a local civil affairs bureau. There was no word, though, on the number of people made homeless. Yunnan suffers frequent earthquakes. The last was on Aug. 6, also of magnitude 5.3. No deaths or injuries were reported from the earlier quake. A magnitude-5 quake is capable of causing considerable damage.
