Burundi's next government must reach a ceasefire with the nation's remaining rebel group and make serious reforms of its security forces to consolidate peace, a United Nations official said on Monday. "Although the peace process has reached an appreciable stage, the war is not totally finished," said Carolyn McAskie, head of the U.N. Operation in Burundi (UNOB) overseeing the tiny central African nation's attempt to end its recent violent past, Reuters reported. "Burundi's future leaders must engage in serious talks with rebels from the Forces for National Liberation (FNL) to reach a global ceasefire agreement which definitely puts an end to this conflict," McAskie added, She also urged the FNL to begin serious talks. Burundi's peace process has advanced with a series of local and legislative elections in recent months won by the former Hutu rebel group Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD).
