But players sold Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. following
their dismal earning results Thursday. Sony dropped 3.6
percent to finish at 3,710, while Toshiba fell 1.1 percent
to 437 Friday.
Volume on the first section was estimated at 1.752 billion
shares, down from 1.956 billion shares Thursday. Decliners
edged gainers 775 to 703, while 169 others finished
unchanged.
In currency trading, the dollar bought 112.18 yen on the
Tokyo foreign exchange market at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT) Friday,
down 0.45 yen from late Thursday but above the 112.12 yen
in New York later that day. The dollar ranged from 111.94
yen to 112.43 yen.
The euro rose to US$1.2088 from US$1.2047 late Thursday.
The 10-year Japanese government bond rose to 1.3050
percent from Thursday's finish of 1.3000 percent. Its price
fell 0.04 to 99.08.
