Police arrested four men in the central city of Birmingham early Wednesday in connection with attempted bombings on London's transport network on July 21, authorities said. The first man was arrested at about 4:30 a.m. (0330 GMT), as police executed a search warrant at an address in Heybarnes Road, Hay Mills, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. The man was subdued with a stun gun, police said. He was taken to a central London police station. Three other men were arrested after a search warrant was executed at an address in Bankdale Road, Washwood Heath, police said. They were taken into custody by West Midlands police in Birmingham, 100 miles north of London. At the first location, a suspicious package was found, authorities said, and nearby residents were evacuated. A police bomb squad was on scene. Forensic examinations were under way at both locations, police said. The four men were not identified, but police said the arrests were in connection with the July 21 attempted bombings on three subway trains and a double-decker bus. Police would not confirm whether any of the four men arrested were among the bombers sought by police. But CNN's Senior International Correspondent Nic Robertson said: "The fact that one of those arrested has been brought to London indicates that he is central to the police investigation." Five other people were already in custody in connection with the July 21 probe. Police have extended warrants allowing them to continue the detention of three of those people, but have said none of the five are among key suspects in the investigation.
