Indian lawmakers stood in silence on Monday for those killed in recent attacks in Britain and Egypt, and called upon democratic countries to strengthen cooperation to combat terrorism. "India _ being a victim of terrorism for more than two decades _ shares with deep empathy the anguish and pain of the people of the United Kingdom and Egypt at these heinous acts," Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said. Chairman of the upper house, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, said such attacks underscored the fact that open and democratic societies like India were especially vulnerable. "There is a need to strengthen cooperation in a coordinated manner to free the world of this scourge," he said. Bombings in London on July 7 and Egypt's resort of Sharm el-Sheik last Saturday killed at least 120 people.
