Surging flood waters have submerged nearly 150,000 homes in India's remote northeast, killing at least 12 people, as the toll from the deadly monsoon season reached 221, the state government said Sunday. The 12 victims were swept away in six of Assam state's 27 districts over the past four days, a statement said. Nearly 45,000 people have taken shelter in government-run relief camps in schools and other buildings on higher ground in Morigaon and Dhemaji districts, 90 kilometers (55 miles) northeast of Gauhati, the state capital. Monsoon storms have claimed 221 lives so far in seven Indian states over the past month, The Associated Press reported.
