At least 61 people were killed during an attack by Ethiopian bandits on a remote village in northern Kenya, police said Wednesday. Ethiopian bandits attacked villagers in the Turbi area, a remote part of Kenya about 445 kilometers (277 miles) northeast of the capital, Nairobi, killing 45 civilians, many of them children, in a raid Tuesday, not Monday as was earlier reported, police spokesman Jaspher Ombati said in a statement. Kenyan security forces later pursued the bandits, who numbered between 300 and 500, killed 16 of them and recovered 5,000 sheep and 200 cattle, the deputy Eastern Province police chief Gerald Oluoch said in a police report seen by The Associated Press. Ombati said that at least 18 people were injured in Tuesday's attack and security forces also recovered 10 camels and four donkeys from the bandits. He said that no arrests have been made and a combined team of military and police was still on the ground but the attackers are believed to have crossed over to Ethiopia.
