French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, after a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, said Tuesday that the European Union will not accept an Iranian resumption of its nuclear weapons programme. "It's absolutely necessary to state that the Europeans will never accept a resumption of the Iranian military nuclear activities," Douste-Blazy said, according to DPA. Rice reiterated U.S. support for the E.U. negotiations with Iran, led by Britain, France and Germany, aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear arms. The United States believes an Iranian suspension of uranium enrichment, a key step toward weapons, will not be enough, Rice said. "Ultimately the world has to be assured that Iran cannot have this capability," Rice said. "And that will ultimately have to be objective guarantees and we believe that means cessation."
