Two laborers were killed and up to 12 others were believed trapped Wednesday after a tunnel they were building to bring water to a village collapsed in a landslide triggered by heavy rain, an official said. Two bodies have been recovered so far, said Nandkumar Jantre, a district administrator near the village of Dolkamb, some 150 kilometers (90 miles) north of Bombay. Jantre said police feared 12 workers may be trapped inside the tunnel, which was to bring water to Dolkamb. Navy divers were among the rescue workers trying to reach the survivors, but heavy rainfall was hampering relief efforts, he said. "We are hopeful and trying our best to reach and rescue those trapped inside," Jantre was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. Heavy rainfall across western India over the past three days has caused flooding and inundated low-lying areas.
