Hundreds of thousands of Swiss commuters were left stranded Wednesday after a massive power failure brought the country's railway network to a halt, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) spokesman Roland Binz said. Binz spoke of an extraordinary "electricity problem" affecting the entire network, with the source of the difficulties thought to be in the Swiss canton of Tessin, DPA reported. Air conditioning was also lost on trains in the power outage as the country sweltered in record temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius. The SBB deployed diesel powered train engines to move stationary trains to the nearest stations.
