Rising floodwaters kept hundreds of Alberta residents from their homes on Monday, but officials hoped a dam and a helpful log jam would limit the flooding damage to the city of Drumheller. The province was experiencing its worst flooding season in at least 75 years, with emergencies declared in communities including Edmonton and Calgary -- where the some of the 1,500 people evacuated during the weekend were allowed to return home. About 3,000 residents of Drumheller, about 100 km (65 miles) northeast of Calgary, were evacuated from their homes, where the the rain-swollen Red Deer River was expected to crest late on Monday, Reuters reported. "We're going to have flooding. It's a question of how widespread it will be," Alberta Environment Minister Guy Boutilier told reporters in Drumheller, where crews were busy adding to the city's dike system . Boutilier said crews were using a flood-control dam to attempt reduce the expected crest on the Red Deer River and had received some unexpected help from a log jam that was slowing the flow on a tributary to the river. --More 2329 Local Time 2029 GMT
