European Union leaders showed no new determination at a summit Friday to lift their arms embargo on China, keeping the issue on ice while focusing their attention inward on Europe's problems. In an early draft of their closing statement, EU leaders merely recalled a previous statement made on the arms ban in December, indicating they remain divided over ending the ban, according to AP. They said work on lifting the embargo was «well-advanced» and indicated they wanted to take a final decision soon. Yet they also said that ending the embargo should not lead to either a «quantitative» or «qualitative» increase in weapons sales to China _ seeking to allay fears that Europe's arms manufacturers will beat a path to Beijing's door. The United States opposes Europe lifting the embargo that was imposed after Chinese troops crushed pro-democracy demonstrations on Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989. --More 1426 Local Time 1126 GMT
