Thirty-six children and two adults are now known to have died when a torrent of flood water smashed into a primary school in mountainous northeast China, the Xinhua news agency reported. Rescue workers were looking for five pupils and two villagers still missing in the wake of the flash flood and "ensuing mountain torrent" that hit the town of Shalan near Ning'an city in Heilongjiang province on Friday, Xinhua said. "Another 15 students and two teachers have been hospitalized for emergency treatment," it said, citing information from the local rescue operation headquarters. Most of the town was still under one meter (3 ft) of water, said an employee at the hospital where the injured were taken. All of the injured children were in stable condition, she told Reuters by telephone.
