The United States said Wednesday it wants the U.N. Security Council to wrap up the work of U.N. weapons inspectors in Iraq before September. Acting U.S. ambassador Anne Patterson told reporters after a Security Council discussion there was consensus that the mandate of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission needs to be «rapidly reviewed» because things have changed on the ground, according to AP. She said council members were anxious to get the commission's work done this summer, before a summit of world leaders in September. The United States is talking to key delegations, «and I frankly don't think this will be difficult,» she said. The commission, known by its acronym UNMOVIC, is charged with dismantling Iraq's chemical, biological and long-range missile programs. France's U.N. Ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere, the current council president, said there was growing agreement to start a discussion soon on UNMOVIC's future. --Mor 2332 Local Time 2032 GMT
