A moderate earthquake shook the area near Turkey's border with Iran on Sunday, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries, The Associated Press reported. The magnitude 4.6 quake struck Hakkari province at 6:45 a.m (0345GMT), according to the Kandilli Observatory, based in Istanbul. Reports said that residents rushed outside following the temblor, but there was no indication of any damage or injuries, according to Deputy Gov. Sezgin Ucuncu. Quakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the active North Anatolian fault. Two devastating earthquakes killed about 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey in 1999.
