A senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Thursday that Israel would honor a pledge to the U.S. to dismantle unauthorized settlement outposts, but only after this summer's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank. Dov Weisglass, speaking at an academic conference on national security, said the Gaza pullout plan would place great strain on the security forces charged with its implementation and they would not be able to take on additional operations for the time being. "We promised the American administration that we would dismantle unauthorized outposts," Weisglass told the Tel Aviv conference. "This is a promise that we plan to fulfill but ... there is a limitation how many traumas one government, one army, or one police force can take upon itself at one time," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
