At least eight men were hacked to death Friday by Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) guerillas armed with machetes and axes in the country's north, military officials told Reuters. The attack occurred in the region of the district town of Kitgum, 460 kilometres north of the capital Kampala. No independent account of the incident was available, said Reuters. The latest round of fighting between the Ugandan government and LRA rebels began when the rebels refused to sign a draft ceasefire treaty on December 31. The LRA, whose military and political agenda remain elusive, have fought in the region bordering Sudan a 19-year war that has displaced over 1.5 million people. --SP 2136 Local Time 1836 GMT
