Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot sides back to the negotiations table in order to end the division. Annan's efforts failed when the Greek-Cypriot community rejected in a referendum his plan for re-uniting the two sides under a federal government. The Turkish-Cypriot community, however, accepted the plan. The referendum was held in April, 2004, just before the Greek- Cypriot side entered the European Union. The Greek-Cypriot part of the island is the onlyi one recognized by the international community. Cyprus is divided by a ceasefire line that runs across the island, cutting Nicosia into two parts. The line is manned by a U.N. peacekeeping force. ---SP 2312 Local Time 2012 GMT
