Luis Posada Carriles, the fugitive anti-Castro operative seeking asylum in the United States, was charged Thursday with illegal entry into the United States and must remain in U.S. custody until a hearing in June, U.S. immigration officials said Thursday, dpa reported U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said a hearing had been scheduled before an immigration judge for June 13, and that he would be held "in custody without bond". He has been served "with a charging document alleging that he entered the United States without inspection", a statement said. Posada Carriles, whose quest for asylum in the United States after fleeing South America has provoked anger in Venezuela and Cuba, was nabbed Tuesday for entering the U.S. illegally without a visa, across the unguarded Mexico border. He had been in Florida for weeks and even held meetings with journalists during that time, telling them he had taken a bus across Texas to Florida. By law, the U.S. had to decide to file charges by Thursday afternoon after the initial detention for violating immigration laws on Tuesday. --More 2316 Local Time 2016 GMT
