The United States is imposing quotas on several categories of textiles from China in order to prevent the U.S. market from being flooded with Chinese imports, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez announced in Washington. According to the announcement, the quotas to be in effect at the end of May would cover shirts and blouses, trousers and undergarments. Gutierrez also said there would be consultations with China to find solutions to the trade problem, DPA said. A condition to China's acceptance into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in January 2001 was the ability until 2008 of WTO members to impose quotas on Chinese textiles should domestic markets suffer inordinately.
