Taiwan's ruling party won elections
Saturday for a special assembly charged with amending the
island's constitution, giving a big boost to President Chen
Shui-bian's policy of resisting unification with rival
China.
With 98 percent of the ballots counted, The Associated Press quoted the Central Election Commission as saying that Chen's Democratic Progressive Party had won 42.5 percent of the vote, against 38.9
percent for the opposition Nationalist Party.
