At least three people were killed in accidents related to heavy rains in the Dominican Republic that have flooded hundreds of homes and cut off several towns to the north, rescue workers said Friday. Three people were electrocuted in Puerto Plata province, 205 kilometres north of Santo Domingo, when they touched electricity cables knocked down by the rains, officials said. dpa reported The governor of Puerto Plata, Francis Vargas, said the victims were killed in separate towns. Rainfall in the last several days reached 229 millimetres in Puerto Plata, where dozens of homes were flooded. In Nagua, 35 small villages were cut off by water from rivers that flooded their banks. At least 15 homes were dragged away by a river in Padre las Casas, 200 kilometres northwest of the capital. More rainfall was expected over the weekend. In May 2004, heavy rains caused the flooding of the Blanco river on the border with Haiti. At least 400 people were killed and another 300 were declared missing. ---SP 2327 Local Time 2027 GMT
