A key Republican senator strongly opposed to U.S. President George W. Bush's controversial choice for ambassador to the United Nations said Thursday he would allow a full Senate vote even though he considers John Bolton a "poster child" for arrogant diplomacy, dpa reported Senator George Voinovich of Ohio plans to break ranks with Bush's party and side with Democrats by opposing Bolton, but also said the Senate should be permitted to conduct an "up or down" vote. Senators rarely oppose their party's nominees, but taking it to the full Senate, where Republicans hold 55 of the Senate's 100 seats, could clear the way for Bolton's approval - even if he doesn't get a positive nod from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Voinovich's reluctance to support Bolton could however weaken the nomination. Voinovich said during the committee meeting that Bolton's abusive style will not serve the best interests of the United States at the international body. He said Bolton had "serious deficiencies". "John Bolton is the poster child of what someone in the diplomatic corps should not be," Voinovich said, adding he would have been "fired" if he worked for a major corporation. --More 2313 Local Time 2013 GMT
