They also clashed over Taiwan. Li expressed dismay over recent comments by Machimura in which he described Taiwan as being within the scope of the Japan-U.S. joint security treaty. Li reiterated that Taiwan was a domestic issue for China and added: "It is a dangerous thing to challenge China's core interests," the Japanese official said. Japan is worried about China's military build-up in recent years and after February talks with the United States, the two allies referred to a peaceful resolution of Taiwan Strait issues as a strategic priority.
