Heart surgery on one of the quintuplets born to a surrogate mother has gone smoothly, reported AP today. Javier Moreno made it through the six-hour procedure and was in critical condition Monday night at Phoenix Children's Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Jane Walton said. "Everything is great, it all went as planned," she said. The smallest of five boys at 3 pounds, 7 ounces (1.54 kilograms), Javier had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, where the left side of his heart is underdeveloped and can't pump blood properly. The survival rate for a full-term baby with this condition after surgery is 80 percent, doctors said. While doctors hoped to postpone the surgery until Javier gained more weight, they said his heart was not strong enough to wait any longer. The quintuplets received international attention after Teresa Anderson _ a 25-year-old a surrogate mother _ delivered the boys last week to a childless couple she met on the Internet. The other four babies _ Enrique, Jorge, Gabriel and Victor_ were doing well.
