On-Don, Russia, April 28, SPA -- One police officer was killed and five were wounded in a shootout in the Chechen capital Grozny, the Chechen Interior Ministry said Thursday. Two police vans returning from an investigation came under fire close to midnight Wednesday in the Staropromyslovsky district of the city, said a ministry duty officer. A local woman was also wounded, he said. In the neighboring Russian region of Ingushetia, an armored troop transporter fell off a mountain road, killing three Russian servicemen and injuring two, said Alexei Polyansky, spokesman for the southern Russian branch of the Interior Ministry. He said that a preliminary investigation indicated that the accident had occurred due to technical problems, not an attack. The Interfax news agency said that the vehicle was based at the military commandant's office in Bamut, Chechnya.
