Among companies reporting, BP closed 0.7 percent higher after reporting a forecast-topping 29 percent rise in its first-quarter profits on the back of high oil prices. Agrochemicals maker Syngenta rose 1.4 percent after first-quarter sales topped forecasts. French software maker Dassault Systemes rose 6.1 percent after reporting quarterly profits that beat expectations and raising its outlook.
