Portugal is sending medical aid to its former colony Sao Tome and Principe to help the West African country contain a cholera outbreak that has killed three people, an official said Thursday. Francisco Jorge, the deputy director-general for health, said a shipment of medicines and a Portuguese cholera expert would arrive Saturday in the twin-island nation. Sao Tome authorities say they have detected 74 cases of cholera, all of them in the capital. Jorge said Sao Tome, which the United Nations classifies as one of the world's poorest countries, must improve public sanitation and encourage personal hygiene to check the outbreak.
