Suwayed said he did not rule out his party's joining the national front "at any time". The SSNP's activity is illegal, like all other Syrian parties, because of the lack of a constitutional law which organizes parties' activities. However, the SSNP has been active in Syria's political life since late President Hafez Assad came to power in 1970. A statement by the party said the meeting was called by Assad.
