A rescue helicopter evacuated crew members of a Singapore-flagged cargo ship after a fire broke out Thursday in its engine room as it sailed south of Athens, the Greece Merchant Marine Ministry said. Firefighting boats were at the scene of the fire, which broke out aboard the cargo ship Aniara as it sailed about 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Athens in the Saronic Gulf. According to the ministry, which is responsible for the Greek coast guard, the fire was apparently under control but some of the 24 crew members were being evacuated as a precaution. It said there were no injuries and the crew was not in danger.
