Former British Labour Prime Minister Lord Callaghan died Saturday a day ahead of his 93rd birthday, a family spokesperson has announced. He died at home just 11 days after his wife Audrey passed away, a statement said. Callaghan, who became a lord in 1987, was elected prime minister in 1976 after Harold Wilson resigned. He lost elections in 1979 to the Conservative candidate Margaret Thatcher. Callaghan also held the posts of chancellor, foreign secretary and home secretary during his long political career.
