A fire broke out near Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum on Monday, but police said there was no danger to the museum that houses a collection of 17th century Dutch masters, including 20 paintings by Rembrandt. A Reuters cameraman on the scene said the area around the museum, an Amsterdam tourist magnet, was enveloped in smoke and the smell of burnt rubber was in the air. A police spokesman said the fire broke out at a construction site about 50 metres (yards) from the museum building. "There's no danger for the museum," the spokesman said. The Amsterdam fire brigade said the fire broke out shortly after 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) when workers welded gas pipes together, and it was brought under control one hour later.
