Rehabilitation and reconstruction of four southern Indian states devastated by the recent tsunami could cost as much as US$1.2 billion (¤900 million), says a report prepared by the World Bank and other agencies. At least 10,749 people were killed by the Dec. 26 tsunami in India, with at least 5,640 others listed as missing and presumed dead. The report, released Monday, was prepared by a team of specialists from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and United Nations who visited the tsunami-hit states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry in early February. "Overall rehabilitation and reconstruction needs in the four mainland tsunami-affected states and territories of India are to the tune of US$1.2 billion (¤900 million)," the World Bank said in a statement.
