China's Cabinet on Saturday approved Tung Chee-hwa's resignation as Hong Kong chief executive, the government announced. The resignation was approved at a meeting led by Premier Wen Jiabao, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Tung, 67, said Thursday he had asked to leave his post with two years left in his term due to ill health. Earlier Saturday, Tung was appointed a vice chairman of the Chinese government's top noncommunist advisory body.
