U.N. Secretary General's special envoy Terje Roed-Larsen expressed hope Friday of obtaining during his upcoming visit to Damascus a Syrian commitment to implement U.N. Security Council resolution 1559 as well as a timetable for withdrawal from Lebanon. "We in the United Nations look forward to conduct a fruitful and constructive dialogue with Syria," Roed-Larsen told reporters following talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Hani Mulki in Amman. Asked by reporters if he believed all Security Council resolutions pertaining to the Middle East should be implemented, Larsen said: "I am an envoy for the resolution 1559, but according to our understanding in the United Nations, all resolutions including 242 and 338 should be implemented." U.N. resolutions 242 and 338 both deal with the Israeli-Arab conflict. Mulki called for the application of 1559 (which calls for a withdrawal of foreign forces in Lebanon) and all resolutions relating to the Arab-Israeli conflict, saying that "we in Jordan believe that there should be no selectivity in implementing Security Council resolutions." "The resolution 1559 should be applied in such a manner that does not hurt neither Syria nor Lebanon, or its people's unity and territorial integrity," he said. -
