The death toll so far in Turkey, following a devastating earthquake in the Syrian-Turkish border region, has risen to 3,381 according to the dpa. More than 20,000 people were injured, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has said. At the same time, more than 5,700 buildings reportedly collapsed. Weather conditions in the region are very bad, said Orhan Tatar, head of the Earthquake and Risk Reduction Department, adding that there are heavy snowfall, downpours and strong winds, with freezing temperatures in some places. The powerful earthquake - measuring 7.7 on Richter scale - struck southeast Turkey in the border region with Syria early on Monday morning; it was followed at about noon by another quake with a magnitude of 7.5. AFAD said there had been 285 aftershocks.
