Quds city, Feb 20, SPA -- A new Jordanian ambassador took up his post in Israel on Sunday, ending lower-level diplomatic relations during more than four years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Ambassador Marouf al-Bakhit, formerly Jordan's ambassador to Turkey, flew to Israel on Sunday morning and went straight to his Tel Aviv office. His appointment was announced following a Feb. 8 Mideast summit in Egypt, where Israel and the Palestinians pledged to end violence between them, and Egypt and Jordan said they would once again post ambassadors to Israel. "It's a very welcome step and it's very important in enhancing the relationship between Israel and its neighbors," Israeli Housing Minister Yitzhak Hertzog told reporters at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting. "We commend the Jordanian kingdom and we believe it is a partner for peace and advancement in the area."
