An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck China's far western region of Xinjiang on Tuesday, the State Seismological Bureau said. There were no immediate reports of casualties but at least 30 homes were damaged after the earthquake hit Xinjiang's Wushi county at 7:38 a.m. (2338 GMT Monday), state media said. Wushu lies some 4,000 kilometers west of Beijing, close to the Tianshan mountains on China's border with Kyrgyzstan. The county has a population of 180,000, 97 per cent of whom are from the mainly Moslem Uighur minority, the official Xinhua news agency said.
