A top-ranking regional police officer and three bodyguards were gunned down in the troubled southern Russian region of Dagestan Wednesday, a law enforcement spokesman said. Maj. Gen. Magomed Omarov, Dagestan's deputy interior minister, was driving home from work when unknown assailants fired on his car around 9 p.m. (1800GMT) near the center of the regional capital, Makhachkala, said Abdul Musayev, a spokesman for the Dagestan Interior Ministry.
