The African Union (AU) expects to have 3,320 troops in the Darfur region of Sudan by the end of February, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday evening. There are 195 troops from Senegal headed to Darfur, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said in response to a question from Saudi Press Agency (SPA). This deployment would mean there will be 1,659 AU troops on the ground in Darfur, he added. The United States has provided more than $40 million in equipment and logistical support fro the AU deployment, according to Boucher. "We continue to move that (deployment) process along as quickly as we all can and we think the AU monitors have been effective in some cases calling attention to the problems that have existed but we know that terrible violent attacks continue," Boucher told reporters.
