Athens and Nicosia expressed their eagerness Tuesday for a new attempt to reunite the two communities on the divided island of Cyprus, saying modifications were needed after the Greeks turned down a U.N. brokered deal in May. "We have agreed for the reunification of Cyprus within the framework of an agreed and sustainable solution for the island based on the Annan plan," Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said following talks with visiting Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos. Papadopoulos said the two leaders focused their talks on what aspects of the Annan plan the Greek Cypriots would like changed. U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said he will undertake a new initiative on Cyprus when it will be clear that a settlement is likely, E.U. High Representative Javier Solana said in Brussels Monday. Cyprus joined the E.U. in May after a U.N. plan to reunify the divided island was rejected by Greek Cypriots in a referendum which Turkish Cypriots supported. --More 2344 Local Time 2044 GMT
