Published in Saudi Press Agency on 28 - 01 - 2022

The Committee of Five has strongly condemned the repeated attacks by the Houthi militia against civilians in Yemen, including the attack on local employees of the US Embassy in Sana'a, and its continued heinous terrorist attacks on Saudi Arabia and, most recently, the United Arab Emirates.
This came in a joint statement following the meeting of representatives of the high-level Committee of Five of the governments of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, which was held on January 26, 2022, to discuss the situation in Yemen, with the participation of the United Nations Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg, guest of the meeting.
The statement stressed that these attacks impede peace efforts and exacerbate suffering, noting that the Committee of Five reiterated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, stressing the need to hold the perpetrators of acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.
The Committee of Five expressed its full support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and their legitimate security concerns, calling for an immediate halt to the attacks launched by the Houthi militia.
The statement said that the Committee of Five realizes that Saudi Arabia and the UAE have a legitimate right to defend their territories against terrorist attacks in accordance with international law and in accordance with international humanitarian law, including taking all possible precautions to avoid causing harm to civilians.
The Committee also condemns the detention of the Emirati ship Rawabi off the coast of Yemen and stresses that the Houthi militia poses a major threat to the security of cargo ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
The statement indicated that the discussed Iran's illegal action by supplying missiles and advanced weapons to the Houthi militia, pointing out that this matter constitutes a violation of Security Council Resolutions No. 2216 and No. 2231.
The committee reiterated the importance of reaching an urgent and comprehensive political solution to the conflict and reiterated its support for the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy to achieve this goal, including the renewal of political talks, calling on the leaders of the Yemeni parties to the conflict to engage constructively with the United Nations Special Envoy.
The statement stated that the committee discussed the difficult humanitarian crisis in Yemen, and agreed on the need to continue providing direct humanitarian and development support to Yemen and protect the safety of relief workers, and stressed the need to protect aid delivery methods to reduce the possibility of aggravating the humanitarian crisis, noting that the Committee of Five realizes that the economic crisis in Yemen is exacerbating human suffering.
The Committee of Five stressed the importance of providing additional economic support from the international community to achieve economic stability in Yemen, in addition to implementing necessary reforms to improve financial transparency in the country.
The statement stated that the Committee of Five also discussed the need for an urgent solution to the problem of the tanker Safer, and called on the Houthi militia to allow the United Nations to visit the ship to conduct its assessment, noting that the committee agreed to meet periodically to coordinate the response to the Yemeni crisis, and to support the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen.
