U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate John Kerry met with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Berlin to discuss Middle East policy, the German government said Friday. Kerry and Schroeder met Thursday to discuss conflict in the region, and Schroeder made clear that "peace is not reachable without the USA," a spokesman for the chancellor said on customary condition of anonymity. The Massachusetts Democrat also met with Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer on Thursday to discuss the Middle East, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said. Kerry, who lost the November election to President George W. Bush, spent two years as a youth living in Berlin, where his father was a diplomat. Kerry's short visit to the German capital is part of a trip to Europe and the Middle East. He was to meet with French President Jacques Chirac on Friday.
