Dr Ahmad Mohammed Ali, the President of Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB), and Lebanon-based Hariri Charitable Foundation have been jointly awarded King Faisal International Prize to the service of Islam, while Professor Carole Hillenbrand of the University of Edinburgh won the prize for Islamic studies. The prize for Arabic language and literature was withheld as none of the entries qualified for the award. In other categories, the prize for sciences went jointly to Professors Federico Capasso and Frank Wilczek, American nationals, and Anton Zeilinger, Austrian. Professors Sir Richard Doll and Sir Richard Peto, British nationals, were declared the joint winners of the prize for medicine. Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, the Governor of Assir region and Director General of King Faisal Foundation announced the names of the winners at a ceremony held here on Tuesday evening. The ceremony was attended by a number of princes and senior officials. Each winner will receive a cash endowment of SR750,000, a certificate outlining the laureate's work and a commemorative 22-carat gold medallion.
