An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook northeast Iran on Monday night, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, officials and state media reported. The official IRNA news agency said the quake, centred near the city of Gorgan just east of the Caspian Sea, struck at 10.16 p.m. (1846 GMT) and sent panicked residents rushing into the streets. A Red Crescent official in Tehran, Ali Bahrami, told Reuters telephone lines to the area were down. But Interior Ministry spokesman Jahanbakhsh Khanjani said: "Up to now there have been no reports of casualties and there has been no major damage to buildings." --SP 2342 Local Time 2042 GMT
