Security forces patrolled the northern Pakistani town of Gilgit on Sunday, as the death toll from a spate of sectarian violence rose to 14 and flights to the scenic Himalayan destination were suspended, officials said. Authorities declared a round-the-clock curfew in Gilgit, about 250 kilometers (150 miles) north of the capital, after Saturday's unrest, which was triggered by the shooting of a Shiite Muslim cleric by unidentified gunmen. His supporters went on a rampage, setting fire to shops and other buildings, and clashing with rival Sunni Muslims. The town was calm on Sunday, but the death toll rose to 14 after three people died of their injuries overnight, said Jamil Ahmed, regional chief administrator.
