President George W. Bush's administration continues to support a strong dollar as a goal that is in the U.S. national interest, Treasury Secretary John Snow said Friday «We want to do things to sustain the strength of the dollar; among them is going to the Congress to work on the deficit, to bring the deficit down, to see that we restrain spending,» Snow said in a television interview on CNBC. Last year the Bush administration set a goal of halving the budget deficit as a percentage of gross domestic product within five years. The Treasury secretary said Friday that doing that will raise national savings and improve the country's economic fundamentals. He said Bush's budget proposal for the next fiscal year should help reduce the deficit. --More 2228 Local Time 1928 GMT
