Pakistan and Sudan have discussed rehabilitation of Sudan railways, an official statement. Sudanese Ambassador Daffa Alla Elhaq Ali Osman met Pakistan's Railways Minister Mian Shamim Hyder and discussed matters of mutual interest, especially the rehabilitation of the railways of Sudan. The diplomat told the minister that since attaining freedom on January 1, 1948 from Britain, every government in Sudan has been doing its best to revamp all systems, especially the rehabilitation and reorganization of Sudanese railways. Osman said that a meter-gauge railway track was now present, which was 5, 596 KM long. On this track, passenger trains run with the speed of 40 KM per hour, which takes three days to cover the distance from South to North. The ambassador said the Sudanese government has planned to connect Khartoum with Kenya. Sudan is also connected with Egypt by rail. Osman conveyed to the Pakistani minister the invitation of Sudanese Transport Minister, who desired that Pakistan must rehabilitate and reorganize the railways in order to facilitate the masses as well as for the prosperity of the region. The Pakistan minister assured the Sudanese ambassador that Pakistan would extend cooperation to Sudan for revamping its railway system on modern lines. He said he would shortly undertake an official visit to Sudan.
