The numbers of missing people from the Nordic countries of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark were Thursday uncertain, but alarmingly high, following Sunday's tsunami disaster triggered by a massive earthquake in Asia. In Sweden alone some 1,400 have been reported missing, mainly in Thailand which is a popular destination during the winter months. The Swedish Foreign Ministry has said six Swedish nationals were confirmed dead, while Thai officials listed the number at 54. State Foreign Secretary Hans Dahlgren said Thursday the ministry was due to release a "more reliable figure of those missing," adding that he feared the final numbers of deaths would be "very high". Dahlgren said Sweden had contacted other countries including the United States, Britain and Germany to help transport injured Swedish nationals from Thailand. Ambulance planes and planes where some seats were removed to make room for stretchers were bound for Thailand to ferry injured people, but the capacity was insufficient considering the numbers of injured. --more 1301 Local Time 1001 GMT
